Noel Fogelman: Expansion and The Islanders - Noel Fogelman
If Boychuk could be exposed, I could see Pelech protected over Jonny.... Plus it seems the isles are in pretty good position on who to protect & what to leave exposed... |

If it's one expansion team then Halak won't be getting picked up. Unless some serious restructuring (i.e., trades) are coming this off-season then there is way too much goalie quality available to go with someone like Halak.
Andersen/Gibson
Bishop/Vasilevskiy
Fleury/Murray
Elliot/Allen
Niemi/Lehtonen
Hutchinson/Hellebuyck
Probably even more that I'm missing. I don't think Halak makes the cut and I also don't think the Vegas team will have any trouble getting to 60% of the cap. |

Don't forget, an expansion team is unlikely to just take 2 goalies, they will probably take 3, send one down.
Bishop will be UFA a week after draft, Vasilevsky protected.
Elliott will be UFA a week after draft, Allen protected.
So really, if Pens trade Fleury this summer, which seems more and more likely with what Murray is doing right now; you have Ducks losing a goalie, Jets losing Hellebuyck who'll get sent down, and then the team left deciding between someone like Halak or someone like Lehtonen. At that point, I think it comes down to who else is unprotected on each team. |

True if neither of them are extended. I'd also think Hellebuyck will have graduated to full-time NHL backup by then and the Las Vegas team can take another promising young G with two years pro experience (maybe Broissoit or Saros?) to send down. |

In many expansion drafts, and I am sure this one will be no different, there will be some wheeling and dealing as Vegas makes selections. I could see the Islanders packaging Grabo and Kuli with a trade of draft picks and a player that the Islanders want from another team that Vegas could draft and then turn around and trade. In essence they could even do something along the lines of Grabo, Kuli, and Halak plus a 1 rd in 2019 for Winnipeg's Connor Hellebuyck and Anaheim's Shea Theodore plus a 2nd in 2019. If the deal was worked out beforehand, it would or could be good for both teams. |

"Sportnet's Chris Johnston clarified that players with no move clauses that include a limited no trade clause must still be protected. That covers players like Pittsburgh’s Marc-Andre Fleury." |

Lemme get this straight, the Isles are going to contact Vegas. Tell them to draft hellebuyck and Theodore, so they can turn around and trade them to us for our garbage contracts and a 1st rounder?
First I'm going to say... no way they'd ever do this. ..
and also...
do things actually happen like this? Can someone give me an example like this happening in the last expansion draft?
